After he studied for a bachelor's degree in physiotherapy at the University of Applied Sciences Leiden, he completed a master's degree in policy, communication and organisation at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam between 2015 and 2017. He has visited schools to speak about goal-setting, which he relates to his own studies and sporting career. "In our sport you see many people who quickly choose skating and have a specific goal. I couldn't commit 100% to skating until I got my diploma. I continued to set goals until I actually became a full-time athlete. And now I'm tackling that again in sport. I try to give them the insight that they must have a dream, a goal. In skating, it is often about the Olympic Games and people think in periods of four years. But how can you start such a long process well if you have no smaller intermediate steps? It is intangible, you become directionless." (LinkedIn profile, 19 Oct 2023; schaatsen.nl, 27 Jun 2023)
