In August 2019 he was suspended, along with four other skaters, for two months by the Korea Skating Union [KSU] after being found to have consumed alcohol at the national training centre. (, 15 Aug 2019;, 24 Oct 2019)

His father had dreamed his son would become an international athlete before he was born, and started a business making ice skates when Kim took up the sport. The business became a success and the boots have been worn by a number of Korean skaters, as well as athletes from other countries. (, 01 Dec 2016; MBC, 22 Mar 2014)
InjuriesHe sustained a back injury during the 5000m at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. He was also due to compete in the 1500m at the Games, but pulled out in order to be fit for the team pursuit event. (, 15 Feb 2014)
