In February 2016 he fractured the tibia and fibula bones in his right leg after falling during a training session in Courmayeur, Italy. He had broken the same bones in his right leg in November 2010 after falling during a race in Quebec, QC, Canada. He has had a long career with the Italian men's relay team, a journey that had taken him to five editions of the Olympic Winter Games and finally he accomplished his goal of winning a medal at the 2022 edition in Beijing. "I've been so many years in the national team. I've seen lots of skaters and I have experienced how the men's relay has evolved. I came in 2005 [to the national team] and the team was strong. During the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin we finished just short of the medals in fourth place. In [the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in] Vancouver we were still strong but then came a low point I think because we lost depth in the team. In 2018 the arrival of some youngsters gave the team some fresh air. I also had some bad moments with injuries, specially that of 2016. So I recognised I've passed through a growing up period even if at my age that's not a normal thing. But I then arrived to my peak in [the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in] Beijing."
