Other informationCHANGE OF CLUB
In March 2022 he left his club of seven years, Team Jumbo-Visma, and switched to Team Reggeborgh. "I hesitated for a long time and postponed this choice for too long. I found it really difficult to say goodbye to the people at Jumbo-Visma, because I owe them a lot. It hurts to say that I'm going to be their competitor. But in the end I had to choose for myself because I was ready for something different. Working with coach Robin Derks at Reggeborgh suits me very well. I really like his approach. Very personal, actually. After each training session we talk for a while, he asks how I feel and together we look at what can be improved." (nos.nl, 24 Oct 2022; nu.nl, 20 Oct 2022; schaatsen.nl, 10 May 2022, 18 Mar 2022)

FARMER
He works at his father's farm in Lekkerkerk, Netherlands, and spent much of his time there during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. "As farmers, we live with nature in all seasons and are constantly active in the open air: in winter, ice skating is part of that, I grew up with that. My passion outside speed skating is to go back to my parents' farm and work there and forget about skating and empty my mind for a bit. The farm is where I grew up and it's always been a safe space for me. I recently [speaking in 2020] bought a large piece of grassland for the company, close to our house. A nice investment, which I was able to make thanks to my prize money." (samsungmobilepress.com, 31 Jan 2022; isu.org, 10 Sep 2021; teamjumbovisma.com, 20 Mar 2021; ad.nl, 31 May 2020)

Training RegimeHe includes cycling as part of his training but admits that he does not always enjoy it. "I started skating, because I really enjoy skating. Of course biking is an important part of training, but that doesn't mean that I enjoy it. We have to do really long rides."

Reason for choosing this sportHe followed his sister into the sport. "I started skating for fun, in winter, on the water behind my parents' farm. I always enjoyed skating with friends. It was about fun, and as the years went by it got more serious for me."
