Club / Team | Team Jumbo-Visma [NED] / STV Lekstreek [NED]:
Reason for choosing this sport | He followed his sister into the sport.
When and where did you begin this sport? | He began speed skating at age seven in Krimpenerwaard, Netherlands. He then started taking lessons with coach Dave van Dam at the STV Lekstreek skating club at age 10.
Name of coach | Jac Orie [Jumbo-Visma], NED
Training Regime | He includes cycling as part of his training but admits that he does not always enjoy it. "I started skating, because I really enjoy skating. Of course biking is an important part of training, but that doesn't mean that I enjoy it. We have to do really long rides." |
Nicknames | Schuimpie [given by his first coach Dave van Dam for being the youngest and thinnest in the group]. (trouw.nl, 11 Jan 2019; schaatsen.nl, 01 Aug 2018)
Ambitions | To win gold in the 5000m at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. (sportnieuws.nl, 14 Oct 2021)
Other information | FARMER He works at his father's farm in Lekkerkerk, Netherlands, and spent much of his time there during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. "As farmers, we live with nature in all seasons and are constantly active in the open air: In winter, ice skating is part of that, I grew up with that. I have been at home a lot in recent months [speaking in 2020] and helped a little at my parents' farm in Lekkerkerk. I recently bought a large piece of grassland for the company, close to our house. A nice investment, which I was able to make thanks to my prize money." (isu.org, 10 Sep 2021; teamjumbovisma.com, 20 Mar 2021; ad.nl, 31 May 2020) |
|
Other sports | He has competed in marathon speed skating at national level and in roller speed skating at international level. (proskating.nl, 23 Oct 2014; patrickroest.nl, 01 Sep 2014)
Famous relatives | His older sister Natasja Roest represented the Netherlands in speed skating at the 2013 Winter World University Games in Trentino, Italy. She has also competed in roller speed skating at national level. (patrickroest.nl, 01 Sep 2014; natasjaroest.nl, 02 Jan 2014)
Awards and honours | He was named the 2019 Skater of the Year by the Royal Dutch Skaters Association [KNSB]. (knsb.nl, 19 Jun 2020) In March 2014 he was presented with the Van Polanen Certificate by the mayor of Nederlek, Netherlands. The honour was in recognition of the gold medal he won at the 2014 World Junior Championships in Bjugn, Norway. (deweekkrant.nl, 19 Mar 2014) |
|
Injuries | In September 2017 he broke his left wrist and forearm after colliding with a tractor while training for roller speed skating. (trouw.nl, 11 Mar 2018; nu.nl, 15 Sep 2017) |
