Reason for choosing this sportHis parents initially tried to introduce him to the sport when he lived in Michigan, United States of America, but he was focused on ice hockey at the time. He was eventually inspired to try short track after watching the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. "My first time, I was worried about adjusting to the skate blade since it is thinner than on hockey skates. I ended up not having any problems. Everyone was surprised at how well I did."

Other informationPOST-OLYMPIC BLUES
He was an alternate at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, but did not compete. As a result, he questioned his ability and almost retired after the Games. The newly appointed national coach Wilma Boomstra was able to convince him to continue "I was asking myself, 'Am I really that good? I can't even skate at the Olympics.' I've asked that a lot. 'Is this all I can really do? Am I done?' I asked myself that a lot [in 2018/19 season] because I just wasn't good. I still had the baggage from the Olympics. I think my talk with Wil was the thing that really was the turning point. I was able to bury all my doubts, all my grudges, everything that happened to me at the Olympics and that season. I was able to bury it and just forget about it, or not have it affect me as a skater. (sltrib.com, 04 Jan 2020)
