She has Korean heritage, and began living in Kazakhstan in 2014. The following year she applied to become a citizen of Kazakhstan, with the aim of representing her new nation at the 2017 Winter World University Games in Almaty, Kazakhstan. NEW NAME
While applying to become a citizen of Kazakhstan, she wanted to adopt a new Kazakh name - Aliya. However, changing her name would have complicated the transfer procedure, so she decided to keep her original name. Her teammates call her Aliya. (sports.kz, 28 Oct 2016)
