Other information | RETIREMENT She retired following the 2022 Dutch National Sprint Championships in Heerenveen. "Retiring gives you mixed feelings. I've been struggling with myself for a while about what I was going to do. When you finally make the decision, there is a feeling of relief. I didn't skate well in the Olympic qualifying tournament, so after that the first emotional decision was, 'I'm done with this'. I still had thoughts that it would be a new year with a new chapter, but then you start thinking. I noticed I no longer had a goal in mind. Then you notice that the fire just goes out. I'm someone who always wants to give 100% and I couldn't do that anymore. Then you have to honestly look at yourself in the mirror and say that you are going to stop. I am going to start a new chapter. I've got lots of plans, but first I want to take the time to reflect. First I'm going to enjoy what I've achieved, because when you're in the middle of that world of elite sports you don't give yourself the time to be proud of what you have accomplished. Now I am very proud of my career." (op1npo.nl, 24 Jan 2022; Instagram profile, 23 Jan 2022) UNEXPECTED MEDAL She was a member of the Dutch women's short track 3000m relay team that won a bronze medal at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang despite not qualifying for the A final. Two out of four teams in the A final were disqualified, meaning the Dutch team - who won the B final in a world-record time - were presented with the bronze medal. (deadspin.com, 21 Feb 2018; bbc.com, 20 Feb 2018) OTHER ACTIVITIES She worked as an analyst for the Dutch Broadcasting Foundation [NOS] covering short track at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. In October 2018 she launched her own line of jewellery called 'van Jorien'. (Instagram profile, 05 Feb 2022; schaatsen.nl, 10 Jan 2019) |
When and where did you begin this sport? | She began skating at about age 11 in the Netherlands. She initially competed in short track before later taking up speed skating. |
Other sports | She competed in both speed skating and short track at the Olympic Winter Games in 2014 and 2018. (Pyeongchang Entries, 14 Feb 2018; SportsDeskOnline, 22 Feb 2014) |
Reason for choosing this sport | Her father introduced her to skating. She decided to take up speed skating in order to improve her physique for short track. |
